Refrigerator not cooling
If the freezer is still cold but the fresh-food side is warm, cold air isn't getting through — usually a stopped evaporator fan or a coil blocked with frost. If both sides are warm, the problem is on the compressor side.
Usual causes: evaporator fan motor · defrost heater, thermostat or control · condenser fan · start relay · dirty condenser coils
Freezer not freezing or frosting over
A thick layer of frost on the back wall means the automatic defrost has stopped working. Soft ice cream with no frost usually means weak airflow or a failing compressor start circuit.
Usual causes: defrost heater · defrost thermostat · defrost timer or board · door gasket · evaporator fan
Refrigerator making noise
Clicking every few minutes, buzzing, grinding or a fan that scrapes on ice. The sound and where it comes from usually tell us which part is going before we open anything.
Usual causes: fan blade hitting ice · worn fan motor bearings · compressor start relay clicking · ice maker
Ice maker not making ice
No ice, small or hollow cubes, or water dispensing slowly. Often a frozen fill tube or a failed water inlet valve; a clogged water filter is the cheap thing to rule out first.
Usual causes: water inlet valve · frozen fill tube · ice maker assembly · water filter · low water pressure
Refrigerator leaking water
Water under the crisper drawers or on the floor. Most often the defrost drain is clogged and meltwater overflows; leaks at the back point to the water line, valve or filter housing.
Usual causes: clogged defrost drain · water inlet valve · filter housing · supply line · drain pan
Refrigerator running constantly
A compressor that never shuts off is working too hard — dirty coils, a leaking door seal or a bad temperature sensor. Left alone, it shortens the life of the compressor.
Usual causes: dirty condenser coils · door gasket · thermistor / temperature sensor · condenser fan
